Frontiers of Understanding
This programme was produced in and around Heraklion on the Greek island of Crete for the Institute of Marine Biology. It featured sequences on board the research ship Philea; underwater images of the unimagined riches of marine life 1500 metres down in the Eastern Mediterranean, shot from a manned submersible; and new footage of the ancient city of Knossos.
The film reflected the variety and complexity of the Institutes major scientific research projects and included highly contrasting topics from pioneering modelling work on the local ecosystem to fish genetics, from the environmental impact of an oil spill to pollution from aquaculture, from research on hydrothermal vents to population dynamics.
Professor A. Eleftheriou, Founder Director, Institute of Marine Biology of Crete, Greece
Callisto Productions has a rare ability to simplify rather complex ideas in science and technology and to present these in such a way that they are universally understood and appreciated. Callistos productions are both imaginatively conceived showing real artistic flair and carried out to the very highest standards.
We were aware of Callistos reputation for delivering excellent results before we commissioned them to produce the promotional video for the Institute of Marine Biology of Crete, Frontiers of Understanding.
They integrated well in our multi-disciplinary teams and were very skilful in organising and coordinating the production, not always an easy task when dealing with scientists whose demands are often conflicting. The film was very well received throughout Europe and certainly enhanced the public perception of the IMBC. ![]()
